Origin

Seamer : 1: from the Middle English personal name Semer Samar (Old English Sǣmǣr from sǣ ‘sea’ + mǣre ‘famous’). Some of the following bearers may alternatively belong with (2) or (3). There may also have been confusion with Seymour. 2: from either of two places called Seamer (NR Yorks) or from Semer (Suffolk) or Semere near Dickleburgh (Norfolk). The place-names all derive from Old English sǣ ‘sea lake’ + mere ‘pool’. 3: from Middle English semer(e) ‘tailor’ (Old English sēamere). Compare Simister.

Ireton : English: most probably a habitational name from Kirk Ireton (Derbyshire) or perhaps from Ireton Farm in Weston Underwood (Derbyshire) both named in Anglo-Scandinavian as Íratūn ‘settlement of the Irish’ or more likely ‘settlement of the Irishman’. The reference may be either to a Scandinavian Viking who had been in Ireland or to an Irishman who came to England with the Vikings. Occasionally the name may also derive from either of two places called Irton in North Yorkshire of which Irton in Seamer parish is a more likely source than the lost Irton in Coxwold. Both the North Yorkshire places have the same etymologies as those above.

Umpleby : English (North and Yorkshire): perhaps a variant of Uppleby with an intrusive -m-. Uppleby may be from Middle English up in by ‘up in the village’ (i.e. at the top end) a name which is recorded in Haisthorpe (East Yorkshire) in 1297. The development to Uppiby and Uppilby can be seen in villages not far away such as Seamer Old Malton New Malton and Buckton. From East Yorkshire the name migrated to North Lincolnshire on the Humber and apparently to Yorkshire where the presumed variant Umpleby is the only recorded form.
