Coslett : German and Welsh: from early modern German korselett ‘corslet piece of body armour’. The name is said to have arrived in Wales from Westphalia in the person of Corslet Tinkhaus an expert in the production of malleable iron who came in 1567 at the behest of an Elizabethan monopoly patent-holder for iron wire William Humfrey active in Usk and Tintern (Monmouths) and Machen (Glamorgan). If that is correct Tinkhaus' personal name (or rather nickname) was inherited by his descendants rather than his surname. The English loss of /r/ before /s/ has many parallels e.g. in cuss for curse.

Mauchan : 1: from Machan in Dalserf (Lanarks). The place-name is of uncertain origin but may be compared with Machen (Monmouths) explained in Place-Names of Wales as Welsh ma + personal name ‘plain of Cein’. 2: from Ó Mocháin see Mohan.

Nonnenmacher : German: occupational name for a gelder of hogs from Middle High German nunne nonne ‘nun’ and by transfer ‘castrated hog’ + an agent derivative of machen ‘to make’.

Schumacher : German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for a shoemaker from Middle High German schuoch ‘shoe’ German Schuh + an agent derivative of machen ‘to make’. This surname is also found in Denmark and Sweden.
