Alternatively it may have been a nickname for someone who wore clothing with conspicuous sleeves; in medieval times the size of sleeves was regulated by luxury laws.2: German: from a pet form of any of the ancient Germanic personal names formed with Erm from erm irm ‘all-encompassing great’.
