How to add a family picture to your Geneanet family tree?

You can add one or more images and/or documents to an individual in your family tree. JPEG, PNG, BMP, and GIF file formats are supported (14 Mb maximum) as well as PDF documents (30 pages maximum). A portrait picture will appear at the top and bottom of the person’s Profile view and as a thumbnail in Family Tree view. A family picture or document will only appear at the bottom of the person’s Profile view. You can associate a family picture to several individuals if you wish through your tree’s image library. A multipage document upload enables you to group several images together, for example from a census (note that this is not necessary for PDF files).

Go to a person in your family tree, then click “Edit > Upload media files” in the menu bar at the top right of the page and select the type of image you want (portrait, family, or multipage). For a family picture or document, it’s also possible to click the Edit button under the person in your tree, then select “Add picture”.

Ideally, a portrait photo will be a photo of the person. However, you may upload the image you wish: a gravestone or obituary for example. The image will be linked to the person.

A family picture, paper, or document image or PDF will appear in the “Photos and archival records” section of the Profile view. Add several images or documents if you wish. Each image or PDF added to your tree is stored in your Family Papers & Pictures library, accessible under the “Other Tools > Archival Documents & Pictures” menu of your family tree. You can add an image from your library to other individuals in your tree, no need to upload the same file twice.

Remember, you retain full ownership of your family tree and the documents you share on Geneanet.
