Museum Discovers Gravestone 18th Century ‘Snow White’ Inspiration

A museum has discovered the gravestone of an 18th-century German aristocrat who suffered at the hands of an evil stepmother and is believed to have inspired the fairytale Snow White.

The burial plaque of Maria Sophia von Erthal was lost after the church where she was laid to rest was demolished in 1804, but recently reappeared at a house in Bamberg, Bavaria. The family donated it to the city’s Diocesan museum, where it has become a focus for locals proud of their area’s alleged connection to the famous fairytale, which was published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812.
