Geneanet at RootsTech 2018 (2)

Posted by Jean-Yves on Mar 2, 2018

Day 3 at RootsTech 2018 which is opening today. Last night, we could met some Geneanet enthusiasts.

D Day

We woke up at 6:30am and had a continental breakfast.

It’s now time to go to the Salt Palace Convention Center. The hall is very impressive but everything is big here, in Salt Lake City.

Several floors, some conference rooms everywhere, a huge exhibition hall in the basement, and thousands of genealogists who go through the hallways. The contrast between the quiet that reigned outside and the crowd attending the convention is striking.

Parisian commuters, does it remind you of anything?

Before going to our booth, we attend the official opening ceremony. A comedian makes everyone laugh, then a short video presented by one of the official partners of the convention is shown on six giant screens surrounding a giant stage. This is about two sisters who meet for the first time after a DNA test matched them together. At the end of the video, the sisters are on stage to share an emotional moment.

All the Americans we meet are absolutely kind and amazed to meet French genealogists when they come visit us.

Our booth is small compared with the one of the American genealogy companies. We are surrounded by the Utah Cemetery Association, the inventor of an ultra-powerful microfilm scanner, and an alley with two leather couches where visitors take a break.

A volunteer is joining us. Christine lives here, in Salt Lake City, but she was born in France and grew up in the USA. She’s on the right of the picture below. She spent the day with us and we thank her so much for her kindness and her personal involvement.

Chris brought some cakes and we ate them all!

Here are some pictures of the convention. DNA testing is highly popular!

Tomorrow, another volunteer will replace Chris and we’ll see her again on Saturday…

I love Geneanet, I have been a member for 10 years. I am able to find my ancestors on that site in the comfort of my home office. this is the 2nd year that I have helped in the Geneanet booth, at Roots Tech. Its a lot of fun meeting people from America who have ancestors in Europe and show them what help we have for them.

Is DNA testing legal in France and Switzerland?
Sorry I wan unable to visit with you at RootsTech.

Answer from Geneanet:

DNA testing is illegal in France.
