Possible Cause Colonial Era Mexican Epidemic Identified

It has been described as one of the most devastating epidemics in human history – and now scientists have discovered what caused it. An outbreak of a mystery disease in 1576, and second wave in 1576, killed around seven million to 17 million people and helped destroy the mighty Aztec Empire.

A new study of ancient teeth has helped reveal that Aztec’s collapse may have been due to the food poisoning bug salmonella, to which the locals had no resistance. The study claims this is the first evidence of the bacteria ever found in the South Americas.
