Mid-Century San Francisco Archive Photos Unseen For Decades

A few weeks ago we unearthed a series of San Francisco street scenes from the Chronicle archives. The images – which pre-dated 1950 – had been unseen for decades. The photos were so popular that decided I should scan the image folder of the years following 1949. To me they’re every bit as wonderful as the earlier ones.

The photos were found in folders that originally covered traffic issues of the day. Today they are better suited to illustrate the changes that the city has gone through over the past six decades. It’s fascinating to see the cars, the architecture, the signs for businesses, at one time bustling, now long gone.
