British Second World War Soldiers Given Military Burial Three Years After Amateur Historians Found Remains

He died in a hail of bullets and shrapnel while trying to storm heavily defended German positions on top of a scrub-covered hill in southern Italy.

But after 74 years, Lance Corporal Ronald Blackham was buried with full military honours in a British military cemetery near the port of Salerno, where tens of thousands of Allied troops poured ashore in September 1943.
