Merging Duplicates

Post by wooftyjones »

In am fairly new to Geneanet although I use many other genealogy software/websites. I find this system SO frustrating. I dont have any problems with the other systems .

I had a duplicated person in the tree. I have made a note of the number for both of them and have tried to merge them but all I get is an ERROR. There was a slight difference in their individual records and I have tried to edit them to make them identical, still ERROR. I thought maybe it is because they are linked to other other family members so I unlinked them and tried again, still ERROR.

Through this unlinking, linking and editing process I have ended up with further duplicates so the problem is getting worse not better. I have spent the best part of three hours on this this afternoon and am slowly loosing the will to live. I have searched and searched the forum for an answer to my problem to no avail. I am at the point now where I am considering deleting the whole tree and importing a gedcom from another system where I know it is correct, it seems to be the easiest and less time consuming option at the moment, but before I do I thought I would ask the community because if this happens again, I do not want to be deleting and importing Gedcom all the time. There has to be a way of correcting errors more simply surely?

Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

Please go to https://gw.geneanet.org/wooftyjones_w?m=DUPLICATES&sz=200&spouse=on&unnamed=on to easily merge duplicates.

Note that if you don't make the corrections in your genealogy software, you will overwrite the corrections made in Geneanet next time you will import a GEDCOM file.

Thank you for that information. I have already tried that but neither of the individuals concerned appear on the duplicates listing, I think I have finally manged to correct the duplication. Whether is is more by luck than than anything else, I found the people concerned, clicked Edit on the right side of the tool bar, clicked on Edit individual, scrolled down to Merge with, clicked on that and merged the family. It looks to be corrected now.

Thank you for your help.

Hi!

I have the same problem trying to merge duplicates. I finally found the menu item and page to do so, but the "first name . number last name" never works. I tried all sorts of ways to write it (with and without spaces), but still no luck. This should be way easier to accomplish!

Thanks,
Felicitas

Dear Mr. Baxter,

I am once again having problem with ancestors which I have to merge. Even though I did so, they still appear double on my tree (the woman is married to two men with the exact same name and the man with two women with the exact same name). I tried merging them again, but it doesn´t work, as the system doesn´t recognize them as being doubles. What should I do?

Thank you in advance,
Felicitas

It might be that you have 2 marriages between the same 2 ancestors.

Thank you, Eric! I was afraid to lose a whole branch if I deleted one of the marriages, but I managed to fix everything in the end. I wish there was a simpler way, though. Thanks again and have a nice day!
