Hi, y'all. I'm brand spanking new to genealogy. In creating my family tree, I was fine with my parents and grandparents, but then I wanted to add my half brother, who was the son of my Mom but of her first marriage (I'm from the second). My brother's leaf is being placed directly between my dad and Mom... and my Mom's first husband appears next to her, but not attached to my brother. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

~Marie.

To remove the link between your half brother and his parents:
- go to one of the parents
- click the pen icon then "Edit relationship"
- go to the bottom of the edit form
- unlink your brother

To link your half brother to the correct parents:
- go to your half brother
- click "Add father" and create the father
- click "Add mother" and enter the name of the existing mother; the program will ask you if it's a new person with the same name or if you want to use the existing person
Best wishes,

Merci, Jean-Yves ;) Thanks! I am going to try that, but... I had already deleted my brother because I got frustrated. Now I can't figure out how to re-add him. If I try to edit my leaf, when I click on "add relative" it only asks me about stepdad or fosterdad or something like that, there are no options for siblings... could I trouble you for that information?

Thanks again... there is one little problem. Once I unlink a parent from my brother, I can no longer SEE my brother. If I try re-adding him, it says he's already there but I still can't see him.

Hi Marie,

Go to your Profile on your tree.
In the upper right corner move the mouse over "Last name"or "First name".
Click on "List of all individuals in the family tree".
There you can check if your brother is there.
I presume it's Patrick Jean Gerard?
Click on his name.
Then follow the directions of Jean-Yves.
To link your half brother to the correct parents:
- go to your half brother
- click "Add father" and create the father
- click "Add mother" and enter the name of the existing mother; the program will ask you if it's a new person with the same name or if you want to use the existing person

Enter the name of your/his mother correctly, so that she appears in the list.
Then click on "Link".
That should do the trick.

Thanks, Edward! I think I finally was able to do it (had to erase and re-add Patrick a bunch of times, I must've been doing it incorrectly). The only remaining question would be about Patrick not showing up still under my Mom when I go back to my main tree...

Hi Marie,

Maybe I am not getting exactly what you mean here, but he definetely shows up if I go to your mother's profile and then click on Family Tree next to Profile.

You did the right thing. ;)

Thanks again ;) I meant that his leaf does not show up next to mine under my main tree. See attached image.

Hi Marie,

Now I see. :)
I think it has something to do with graphical tree, but I'm not sure , so you'll have to wait for the cavalry, Jean Yves. ;)
However if you click on "profile", then you will see your brother under "half-sibling".

Ah, yes, I see it under "profile". I'll wait for Jean Yves's word as well.

Thank you so much for your help! :D

Good morning Jean Yves,

Ik think Marie has it all done right.
She only finds it strange her brother doesn't show up when she clicks on her "profile" then on "family tree".
Under "Profile" there's no problem.
In "family tree" mode her sibling shows when she clicks on her mother name.
This is the normal way an ancestor's tree shows, isn't it?

Yes, we can't see all the relatives at the same time.
