Not User Friendly

Post 01 June 2018, 14:39

I am a very new member to your website- and only found you last week on google when looking for a person on a search & needed to sign up for an account to use it. I checked the info and signed up for Platinum membership.

I have been working on family trees & in Archives for over 30 years now - so not a beginner & consider myself quite experienced in all forms of Genealogy.

Your info looked really good and the website looked easy to use so i signed myself up.

If someone could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Is there any kind of "How to do this " Guide. As I couldn't find any kind of help guide for the Family Tree creation.

I have so far started to set up my tree - tried to edit it - got 2 or 3 duplicates - tried to delete in several different ways - got nowhere - so gave up when i ended up with 2 of me and 3 of my husband & 2 mothers. I then found out how to delete the whole tree.

Started again and couldn't get my tree unless i signed out and back in again - same thing happened again - so i deleted that one too.
Third time round i had marriage problems again & ended up with 2 husbands and a few other things..

I just wanted to know if there was a walk through I may have missed - or a "Help" guide i could access & print off.

I have several qualifications including, HND & City & Guilds certificates. I am not normally a thick person but I dont find the TREE CREATION area very user friendly or easy to set up. AM I MISSING SOMETHING.

I think I have managed to actually get something set up on my tree but find it very hard to edit some things especially marriages and how on earth do you add a second wife or husband. Please tell me there is an easy way to do this as I have a lot of people to add, eventually if i ever have the spare time.

I have successful trees on other websites without any real problems, such as Ancestry, Genes reunited, family search. I have also managed to set up quite few databases & spreadsheets on windows. I did read through several pages on the forum. I therefore think its me and i have missed the "Idiots Guide to setting up your family tree on Geneanet"

Please help as i really do like the layout but lack an awful lot of patience as have very little time to do my hobby. I wanted to get some people on the tree in case it could link and match to others.

Thank you for reading my essay.

Hello
I am not aware of a 'User Guide', but will try to give some tips.
It is possible to edit and build onto your tree from either the "Family Tree" or the "Profile" tab (near top left of screen you can change between these). I find it easier to work with the "Family Tree" view. There you highlight (click on) the individual you want to add to, click on the " + " circle below their name. You can choose to add parent, child, sibling or spouse (multiple spouses possible).' Edit individual' to modify birth or death details, 'edit marriage' to change details of marriage. You will also see a 'Merge' option, to use when you have duplicates of the same person.
I hope this might be useful to get you started on building your tree.
Good luck.
Anne

P.S. You can also import a GEDCOM if you have your tree in that format.

You can find some help at:

If you have a family tree on another genealogy website or a genealogy software, I strongly suggest that you export a GEDCOM file and that you import it to Geneanet at https://my.geneanet.org/arbre/

Please go to https://my.geneanet.org/arbre/options/parametres.php?view=options to change the "Entry mode" and the "Family tree browsing mode" to "Graphic".
