Dear Mr. Baxter,

Having joined Geneanet only recently, I would concur with Mr. de Brigard comments. Instead of having to type all details of my family tree, it would make it so much easier if we could just import data from another family tree. I believe that since these data are freely available there should be no major privacy issue and it would make GeneaNet such a powerful tool.

Best Regards

Francois-Pascal

I understand but we can't make all of the submitted data free to download! We think that it's better if the genealogy researchers contact each other to share data and to discuss about their common ancestors...

Hello, I write in this thread because is something that happens to me too.

In my family tree, Gieco, I 've got a branch that had been already written by another person, Maria Marta Quinodoz, in hers family tree and to not having duplicate entries or to confused readers of my tree I put a link to the branch. You can see it here: http://gw4.geneanet.org/index.php3?b=matigro&lang=en;p=catherine;n=quinodoz in section Notes.
Why did I do this? because Maria Marta is updating hers tree more often than I do and it is up to date.

My suggestion to Geneanet is that we could link people of another tree (with consent) and when I print a tree just use this link to do this. Online or printed could have a notice that says it is another researcher tree and could have his own policies.

Best regards,
Matías

Sincerely sorry for the delay but I was off for some days.

@matigro: Good idea. I'll ask the tech staff if they can do something.

@egarcia1: I'm very glad to hear that you have found people to share with! Hope that you will find new ancestors...

Hi,

Any update on this?

I love geneanet. Same as the original poster, I have found several ascending branches of my family tree in other people's trees (that is, we have many ancestors in common, since our pedigree lines diverged at some point in the past).  Obviously I could copy&paste information on each ancestor and include that in my tree. But that would be neither fair nor practical, and inefficient:

- Not fair: the reference to the person who actually did the research is lost. If trees could be somehow 'joined', the right credit would be given. It may even provide an automatic note on each individual or view stating who provide the profile.

- Not practical: besides the awful lot of time re-typing would take, it is a very error-prone procedure.

- Inefficient: geneanet has no way to 'know' that two individuals are actually the same person unless one compares birth or death dates, which not always are available, which introduces duplicate search results that need to be collated with unnecesary research.

I am Chilean but I have many ancestors from France. I found such ancestors through this site, sometimes all the way to the XVI century. And most times my ancestor who emigrated does not appear with his/her siblings in some trees. Hence the need for a 'join' facility.

Best regards to all,

M. Aubry

Unfortunately, you still have to manually copy the data. You can add the name of the person who did the research in the source field of the individual in your family tree.

Has this been updated? Is there a function to 'link' trees by separate people?

Is this the function? https://en.geneanet.org/help/how-to-match-your-family-tree-premium-members

Linking to other people’s information would be really really really helpful. Any thoughts on when this functionality will be added? Thank you

If it does not become possible to link related parts of a bigger tree, I thinks this site is missing the hole idea of Family Tree...

I certainly agree is a feature that should be given. It is much easier to to do it in https://www.myheritage.com/,
you can validate the results of the match and keep or discard. As such the quality of the tree depends on the user just like in geneanet.

This has been argued for as long as I remember and, in my opinion, is the perfect recipe for errors to be duplicated like wildfire on Geneanet the way they fo on MyHeritage. Someone else's tree should be viewed as a lead and not as a source. All information should be verified before being incorporated in your tree. The time needed to copy the information is negligeable in comparison to the time needed to perform those verifications.
