In genealogy, when recording information about relatives, why is "Place of Marriage" an important thing to acknowledge? What if my relative married in a different location than they resided in?

In most instances, the place of marriage IS the place of residence and where children (at least the oldests) are born. It helps you know where to search for census and birth information. If someone wants to confirm information on your tree, they will know where to look for the marriage certificate.

Destination weddings are a recent development and still fairly rare.
