The gravestone of one of Nazi Germany’s most famous S.S. panzer commanders from WW2 has been stolen from a cemetery in France where he fell in the battle for Normandy.
Police believe neo-Nazi fanatics are behind the theft of the stone marking the resting place of Michael Wittmann in the town of La Cambe. Wittmann rose to the rank of SS-Hauptsturmführer – captain – and received the Knight’s Cross for gallantry from Hitler.
