Behind the London Jewish Museum’s Ambitious Digital Archive Project

Transcribing anything is a painful, tedious process. But imagine if the material you’re transcribing is 40 years old and badly-recorded on dusty, rapidly degrading cassette tapes. As an added bonus, the people speaking often slip into heavily accented Yiddish. This is just one of the challenges faced by London’s Jewish Museum, located down a quiet street in Camden.

The museum will also be photographing and indexing their collection of artefacts, which include hundreds of posters, handwritten postcards, a 17th century Venetian synagogue ark, Hannukah lamps and Purim scrolls, among rather a lot else.
