Vandals apparently overturned more than 50 grave markers over the weekend at the city’s historic Old Kirk burial ground located at the rear of Second Congregational Church. Keith Priesing, a church member and the cemetery’s caretaker, called the damage the result of “malicious vandalism.”
A total of 53 markers, many dating to the early 19th Century, were toppled. Priesing said some stones broke after striking the ground and might not be repairable. The Old Kirk contains graves dating from the 18th Century including as many as 60 Revolutionary War veterans according to a monument on the site.
